All Apple TV models have a dedicated setting for subtitles and closed captions by default. You can turn on subtitles on an Apple TV to watch any language content via captions, even if you don’t understand it. You can enable subtitles on Apple TV by navigating to Settings or clicking the Subtitles button in the playback control. This article explains how to enable or disable subtitles on your Apple TV.
How to Turn On/Off Subtitles on Apple TV
1. Press the Home button on the Siri remote once you turn on your Apple TV.
2. Scroll with the trackpad and select Settings.
3. Under the Settings section, tap Accessibility.

4. Under the Accessibility section, you can see the Subtitles and Captioning option. Click on it.
5. On the Subtitles and Captioning page, click Closed Captions and SDH and turn it On.

Now, the Subtitles are turned on. Play any media, and you can now watch it with subtitles.
6. Consequently, you can switch Off the Closed Captions and SDH option to remove the subtitle feature on Apple TV.
Note: If you can’t find the Apple TV remote or if you have lost it somewhere, you can use the Apple TV remote feature on your iPhone or iPad to enable subtitles.
How to Enable/Disable Subtitles on Apple TV for Particular Media
If you use apps like Disney+, Netflix, or Hulu, you can enable subtitles for them using these steps. Remember that this setting is only available in the media file’s playback control.
Apple TV 4K/HD
1. Play the media that you wish to watch with Subtitles.
2. Grab the Siri remote control and swipe downwards on the trackpad.
3. This will open the Info console. In the playback control, you will find Subtitles.
4. Click the Subtitles icon to turn it On. To disable captions, tap the Subtitles icon again and choose Off.
If you have a voice-enabled Siri remote, you can use voice commands to turn captioning on/off.
Old-Gen Apple TV
1. Play any TV show or movie on your Apple TV.
2. Grab the remote and hold the Center or Select button.
3. You will find a pop-up menu. Navigate to the top and click Subtitles.
4. Choose the On/Off option.
Apart from enabling subtitles, you can also change the subtitle language of your choice. Go to Settings, click Video and Audio, and choose Audio. Then, click Subtitle Language and choose the desired language. You can also change subtitle style, such as Font, size, color, text opacity, etc. For customizations, navigate to Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles and Captioning → Style.
